Post Match Report
This fourth Southern qualifier would give us the remaining three pairs to make up the 12 who will try to become Southern Champions in the final at Thorney Weir on the 5th, 6th and 7th of August.
This match was a sell out of twelve pairs but unfortunately one pair did not show on the day. Which gave the other eleven slightly better odds of qualification.
With the weather still being a bit up and down, it was anybody’s guess how this one would turn out! Following the 9am draw, the anglers made their way to the pegs to wait for the 12 noon hooter commencing the start of the event. By dusk Friday we had four fish out, all to different pegs, and it was looking likely to be a busy one. Bearing that in mind I got my head down ready for the expected onslaught. It was just before 5am Saturday when I was called to peg 2 to weigh a fish for Cliff Baker, who along with partner Peter Hale had landed a mirror of just over 24lb giving them the lead for the time being. Next came Dave Vaughan and Adrian Fautley on 22lb 12oz, which turned out to be the only common in the match. Terry Boardman fishing by himself, because his son Stuart couldn’t make it was next on 21lb 2oz, followed by Alex Duval and Garry Miller with 14lb 14oz. This was the first fish caught on the Friday afternoon. In fifth place was Bryan Houghton and John Picking on 14lb 2oz. All of these pairs were on one fish so the match was there for the taking. 6:15am Saturday I got asked for the boat by Terry in peg 4 as he had a fish weeded up solid. The boat was launched and after following the line through a large weed bed, the fish was released from the weed and played from the bank by Terry. He eventually got it over the net cord and looked very pleased as he had now landed 2 fish, both 21lb +. Late morning, John Picking, peg 10, contacted me to say Bryan had just landed their second fish so I quickly made my way round to do the honours. This time it was one of Sandhurst’s gems, in the shape of a chunky, dark mirror weighing 33lb 9oz. This fish changed everything and rocketed them straight into the lead on 47lb 12oz. With Terry right behind on 43lb 1oz. It seemed along time till the end of the contest as we were still under half way through. Apart from having the boat out again for Terry on the Sunday morning, this time the outcome wasn’t as good and a few other fish lost there was no further action. The way the match started on Friday I thought we were in for a bumper catch but it was not to be this time around. I guess that’s why we love it so much, because you never quite know whats going to happen. Cliff and Peter in peg 2 hung onto third place and were unlucky enough to have lost fish as well.
